 SUNSET AT KAGANBANAz

The west headland of En-Village, Tatsugo-cho, is called Kaganbana. In 1998, a very short (29-meter) tunnel was opened to traffic through a huge seaside rock. This is the Kaganbana Tunnel. Soon it was discovered that the sinking sun fits in the hole of the tunnel on a very fine evening, during several weeks around the vernal and autumnal equinox, if you look through the tunnel from the east end of the village. The moments that the tunnel glows like a dragon's eye got a notorious reputation, and lots of photographers and spectators began gathering around the best viewpoint.

Often the horizon is filled with the clouds, even if the sky is clear. So, the chances you can witness the dragon's eye are never  guaranteed. The probability of successful sightings are 20 to 30 percent. My eye contact with the dragon's eye was only twice, although I frequented the spot seven to eight times.

The pictures shown here were not taken on the same day. They were shot on several different days.
