 SURFING IN AMAMIz

It seems that in Amami, surfing has become more and more popular in the last decade or so. There are surfers who moved to Amami in pursuit of beautiful sea and surf. This gave young Amami people much incentive to master riding the surf. There are also travelers who visit Amami repeatedly to enjoy surfing. Quite a few younger ladies are also trying to be surfers.

The most renowned surfing spot is Tebiro Beach in Tatsugo-cho, where there are no coral reefs and big waves reach the sandy beach without breaking on the way. Katoku Beach in Setouchi-cho is also popular. But, it is a little too far from Amami City. Surfers in Naze region often enjoy surfing at the west end of Ohama Beach. However, since there are coral reefs along this beach, they have to swim out to the open sea and ride the waves in. This is no good spot for beginners.

I myself have never ever tried surfing. But how exhilarating it would be if I could manage to ride the whitecaps of the surf, I guess.
